“now and then comes an hour when the silence is all but absolute, and listening to it one slips out of time.”

Welcome to Quiet The Chaos

Silence an endangered species. By this I mean the presence of natural silence has been driven out by the overwhelming noise created by modern life. This external condition has also become reflected in our internal lives, with many people suffering from near constant mental chatter—myself included.

Like the name suggests, this is a collection of letters meant to respond to the overall lack of silence in our lives by offering moments of quiet attention and reflection upon the natural world. This takes form through a mixture of essays, lyrical prose and poetry, all of which are inspired by place, folklore, animals, poetry and daily glimmers.

A Scottish lass, I am drawn to what is wild and fickle; tempestuous coastlines, glacial-melt pools, violet gullies and granite pinnacles. It is witnessing their chaos that I find myself most quiet.

Because I’m a painfully slow writer and am currently negotiating both life and work post-graduation, I am unable to offer consistency or a separate thread for paying subscribers (yet anyway). However, if I can create even a little kinship, weave my stories into a wider network, it still seems worthwhile to share my words. With any luck, they may allow myself and others to to feel heard, to feel seen, and to connect with someone who relates to the strange and wonderful assemblage we call our lives.

If you fancy being part of this venture, and would like to receive my newsletter, you can subscribe by clicking ‘subscribe now’ below. I promise you won’t be bombarded with emails, and I aim to offer something of value and conversation with every iteration.

It is completely free, but if you’d like to support my writing financially it is possible to become a paid subscriber. If you’d rather support my work through sharing it with someone you think would enjoy it, or simply leaving a thoughtful comment, that is equally appreciated.
